Is The Guardian SecureFuture Income Annuity Any Good?

Guardian SecureFuture Income Annuity Review

The Guardian SecureFuture Income Annuity is a deferred income annuity designed to turn a lump sum or a series of contributions into guaranteed income beginning on a future date.

This is not an accumulation annuity where you watch an account value grow and decide later what to do with the money. You choose the income start date and payout structure when the contract is established, and Guardian prices the future income around those decisions.

The product can be a good fit when the buyer knows when income should begin, does not need meaningful access to the premium, and receives a competitive payout. It is not a good fit for someone who wants to change direction freely, maintain a walkaway value, or preserve complete control over the money.

Our Professional Opinion on the Guardian SecureFuture Income Annuity

Our professional opinion is that the Guardian SecureFuture Income Annuity is a good deferred income annuity when its actual guaranteed payout is competitive, and the buyer is completely comfortable giving up liquidity and control in exchange for a future retirement paycheck.

Guardian is one of the strongest insurance companies in the United States, which matters when an insurer may be responsible for making payments for several decades. The company’s quality is not our concern with this product.

The real issue is the contract structure. A deferred income annuity requires the buyer to make several important decisions upfront: when income begins, whether payments cover one or two lives, whether beneficiaries receive anything after death, whether a guarantee period is included, and whether the payment increases annually.

Once income begins, those decisions are generally permanent. This is traditional annuitization, not a flexible guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit that can be turned on and off while an account value remains available.

That is why we generally prefer a fixed indexed annuity with a guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit for most retirees. A GLWB can provide lifetime income while preserving more control, liquidity, spousal flexibility, and beneficiary value.

However, a DIA can still be the better answer when the payout is materially higher, and the buyer does not need those flexible features. An annuity should do one specific job extremely well. Guardian SecureFuture is designed to create a future income stream, not to provide growth, emergency access, or an enhanced inheritance.

We would never choose this product because Guardian is a great company or because the illustration shows a large future payment. We would choose it only after comparing the actual annual payout against other A- or better-rated deferred income annuities, immediate annuities, QLACs, and GLWB annuities using the same premium, start date, payout structure, and survivor benefits.

The payout option makes a major difference. Life Only generally provides the highest payment, but the payment stops at death, and nothing is left for beneficiaries. Adding a cash refund or guarantee period protects the family, but the starting income is lower because Guardian is accepting more payment responsibility.

Joint-life income can protect a spouse, but the buyer must decide how much income continues after the first death. A lower survivor percentage can increase the initial payment, but it may leave the surviving spouse with too little income later.

The optional annual payment increase is useful, but it is not true inflation protection. The buyer selects a fixed annual increase at issue. The payment begins lower and then rises by that predetermined amount each year, regardless of whether actual inflation is higher or lower.

Do not choose the increasing-income option simply because inflation sounds scary. Compare the cumulative income against the level-payment option and determine how long it takes to recover the income given up during the early years.

We like the one-time income-start-date adjustment because retirement dates change. However, moving the start date does not make the contract fully flexible. The payment is recalculated, the original income option cannot be changed, and the adjustment is not available with every payout choice.

The Payment Acceleration feature is also helpful, but it should not be mistaken for real liquidity. It allows certain owners to receive several scheduled payments early one time. It does not restore access to the original premium or provide an ongoing emergency-withdrawal account.

Guardian SecureFuture can also be structured as a Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract. That can be useful for someone who wants to move part of a traditional IRA outside the normal RMD calculation and delay income until later in retirement. The tradeoff is still the same: the money is committed to a future income promise and is no longer available for normal portfolio withdrawals.

Our bottom line: Guardian SecureFuture is a good product for a very specific buyer, but it is not our default recommendation for lifetime income. We recommend it when the income payout is competitive, the income date is reasonably certain, the buyer has sufficient liquid assets elsewhere, and the selected spouse and beneficiary protections match the retirement plan. Buy it for predictable future income—not growth, liquidity, or flexibility.

What We Like

  • Strong Insurance Company: Guardian is one of the most financially secure annuity companies in the market.
  • Contractual Future Income: The payment is not dependent on stock-market performance, index caps, participation rates, or future renewal rates.
  • Single- and Joint-Life Choices: Income can cover one person or continue through the life of a spouse or other joint annuitant.
  • Cash Refund Option: Beneficiaries can receive the unpaid portion of the premium when the annuitant dies before total payments equal the amount deposited.
  • Guarantee Period Options: Payments can continue to beneficiaries for the remaining guaranteed period after an early death.
  • Survivor Percentage Choices: Certain joint-life options allow the buyer to select how much income continues after the first death.
  • One-Time Start-Date Adjustment: The income start date can be moved within the contract limits before payments begin.
  • Optional Fixed Payment Increases: The buyer can elect a predetermined annual increase to help address future purchasing-power concerns.
  • QLAC Eligibility: Qualified money can be used to create late-life income and coordinate required minimum distributions under current federal rules.
  • Flexible Contributions Before Income: The current design accepts additional contributions, subject to minimums and tax rules.
  • Payment Acceleration: Eligible nonqualified and Roth IRA owners can accelerate several scheduled payments one time under the contract rules.

What We Don’t Like

  • Irrevocable Income Decision: Once income begins, the payout structure generally cannot be changed.
  • No GLWB Flexibility: The contract does not provide the same ability to stop and restart lifetime withdrawals while retaining a normal account value.
  • Limited Liquidity: This is a future-income purchase, not an emergency fund or flexible accumulation account.
  • Life Only Can Leave Nothing: The highest-paying option can stop completely at death with no remaining benefit for family.
  • Beneficiary Protection Reduces Income: Cash-refund and guarantee-period options normally begin with lower payments than Life Only.
  • Increasing Income Starts Lower: The buyer gives up income upfront and may wait years to reach the cumulative break-even point.
  • Not True CPI Inflation Protection: The annual increase is fixed at issue and does not adjust to actual inflation.
  • Payment Acceleration Is Limited: Receiving several monthly payments early one time is not the same as having access to the original premium.
  • Start-Date Flexibility Is Limited: The date can generally be changed only once, and the income option selected at purchase remains in place.
  • No Accumulation Objective: The product is not designed to maximize cash value, market-linked growth, or a transferable account balance.
  • Payout Must Be Compared: A strong company and good contract design do not justify accepting less income than another A- or better-rated carrier will guarantee.

Guardian is an excellent annuity company. Guardian currently carries an A++ (Superior) financial-strength rating from AM Best, which is well above our A- minimum. Our concerns with SecureFuture involve the permanent income election and limited liquidity—not the financial strength of the insurer.

Product availability, issue ages, deferral limits, and payout features can vary by state, funding source, and contract version. Review the current contract and illustration before purchasing.

How the Guardian SecureFuture Income Annuity Works

You contribute money to the contract and select a future date when payments will begin. Guardian uses the premium, the length of the deferral period, the annuitants’ ages, and the selected income option to determine the guaranteed payment.

The product can accept both qualified and nonqualified money. Qualified funding can include a Traditional IRA or a QLAC structure. The current product also permits Roth IRA funding under its applicable rules.

The income start date must generally be at least 13 months after contract issue. The maximum deferral period depends on the funding source, state, age, and payout option.

Longer deferral generally produces a larger future payment because Guardian holds the money longer and the annuitant is older when income begins. That does not mean waiting is always better. The buyer gives up payments during the deferral period and should compare the cumulative break-even point.

Guardian SecureFuture Income Options

Single or Joint Life With Cash Refund

A cash refund annuity provides lifetime income for one or two people. If the annuitants die before total payments equal the premium paid, the beneficiary receives the unpaid difference as a lump sum.

This option protects the family from the worst-case scenario of depositing a large amount and dying shortly afterward. The tradeoff is a lower starting payment than Life Only.

Single or Joint Life With a Guarantee Period

A life annuity with a guarantee period pays for life, but Guardian also guarantees payments for the selected period. If both annuitants die before that period ends, payments continue to the beneficiary for the remaining time.

This structure can balance lifetime income with beneficiary protection. The longer the guarantee period, the lower the initial payment will generally be.

Single or Joint Life Only

A Life Only annuity generally produces the highest income because Guardian’s payment obligation ends at the applicable death.

The downside is blunt: an early death can result in very little total income and no payment to beneficiaries. This option should only be used when maximizing lifetime income is more important than leaving money to family.

Period Certain Only

A period certain annuity pays for a selected number of years rather than for life. If the annuitant dies before the period ends, the remaining payments continue to the beneficiary.

This can be useful for a temporary income gap, but it does not protect against living longer than the selected period.

Joint-Life Income and Spouse Payments

A joint-and-survivor annuity can continue payments through the life of a spouse or other joint annuitant.

Depending on the selected option, the surviving annuitant may continue receiving all or a portion of the payment after the first death. Selecting a smaller survivor payment can increase the initial income, but the surviving spouse may face a substantial income reduction later.

For contracts with a guarantee period, payments generally remain unchanged through the end of the guaranteed period before the survivor percentage applies.

Changing the Income Start Date

Guardian currently permits a one-time adjustment to the income start date before payments begin, subject to the contract limits.

  • The date may generally be accelerated by up to five years, but not earlier than the contract’s minimum deferral date.
  • The date may generally be deferred by up to five years, subject to the maximum deferral rules.
  • The payment is recalculated when the date changes.
  • The original payout option cannot be changed.
  • The feature is not available with every Life Only structure.

This is useful flexibility, but it is not the same as owning an annuity with an income rider that can be activated, stopped, and restarted.

Optional Annual Payment Increases

Guardian offers an optional payment increase benefit that raises income by a predetermined percentage each contract anniversary after payments begin.

The increase must be selected when the contract is purchased and cannot later be changed or canceled. The initial payment is lower than it would be without the increase.

This is not an income stream that tracks actual inflation. It is a fixed annual increase. A year with very high inflation does not produce a larger adjustment, and a year with no inflation does not stop the scheduled increase.

Before selecting it, compare the level and increasing payments and calculate when the cumulative increasing-income total is expected to surpass the level-income total.

Payment Acceleration Is Not Full Liquidity

For qualifying nonqualified and Roth IRA contracts, the Payment Acceleration feature allows several regularly scheduled payments to be paid early as a lump sum. Regular payments resume after the acceleration period ends.

The feature can generally be used only once and applies only to specified refund, guarantee-period, and period-certain options.

This can help with a short-term expense, but it does not permit a full surrender or restore access to the original premium after income begins.

Using Guardian SecureFuture as a QLAC

A QLAC is a deferred income annuity purchased with qualified retirement money. Subject to current federal limits and contract rules, the amount allocated to the QLAC is excluded from the normal IRA balance used to calculate annual required minimum distributions before QLAC income begins.

Guardian currently allows QLAC income to be deferred as late as age 85 under the applicable rules. This can create a late-life income floor for housing, food, healthcare, and other essential expenses.

A QLAC is not a tax-elimination strategy. It postpones taxable distributions on the allocated amount. Once payments begin, the taxable portion is generally treated as ordinary income.

Read our explanation of using QLACs to reduce current RMDs before moving retirement money into a contract that may not provide normal liquidity.

Who Should Consider Guardian SecureFuture?

  • Someone With a Known Future Income Date: You have a pension gap or retirement date that can be planned in advance.
  • Someone Concerned About Longevity: You want a contractual payment that can continue no matter how long you live.
  • Someone With Adequate Liquidity Elsewhere: Emergency reserves and near-term spending needs are funded outside this annuity.
  • Someone Who Wants a Strong Insurer: Guardian’s financial strength is a major priority.
  • Someone Coordinating a QLAC: You want late-life income and are comfortable committing part of a traditional IRA.
  • Someone Who Values Simplicity Over Control: You prefer a fixed contractual income stream rather than managing withdrawals from an account.

Who Should Probably Buy Something Else?

  • Someone Who Needs Liquidity: You may need access to the premium for emergencies, healthcare, housing, or family support.
  • Someone Who Wants to Change Income Later: You want the ability to stop, restart, or restructure payments after retirement begins.
  • Someone Focused on Growth: You want a visible account value earning fixed or index-linked interest.
  • Someone Focused on Legacy: Leaving the largest possible inheritance is more important than maximizing lifetime income.
  • Someone Unsure About the Income Date: Your retirement timing, employment, pension, or Social Security plan may change substantially.
  • Someone Whose Guardian Quote Is Not Competitive: Another A- or better-rated insurer guarantees materially more income for the same structure.

Better Alternatives for Growth or Income Flexibility

Fixed Indexed Annuity With a GLWB

A fixed indexed annuity with a contractual GLWB can provide guaranteed lifetime income while preserving more control over the remaining account value.

This is generally our preferred structure when the buyer values liquidity, beneficiary protection, and the ability to stop or restart income. The tradeoff is that a DIA may occasionally provide a higher payout for the same premium and start date.

Single Premium Immediate Annuity

A single premium immediate annuity is designed for income beginning now or within approximately one year. It can be appropriate when the income need is immediate rather than several years away.

Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuity

A MYGA provides a fixed contractual rate for a selected term and maintains an account value. It can be useful when the buyer wants to accumulate money safely before deciding how and when to create income.

Compare current fixed annuity rates before locking money into a future-income contract. The disadvantage is renewal risk and uncertainty about the income rates available when the MYGA matures.

Other Insurance to Consider

Someone selecting Life Only or a reduced joint-survivor payment may use life insurance to replace part of the inheritance or income lost after death. The life insurance must be evaluated separately based on health, age, cost, and the family’s actual need.

A deferred income annuity also does not pay specifically for home care, assisted living, or nursing-home expenses. Buyers concerned about extended care should separately compare long-term care insurance rather than assuming a future income payment will cover the full cost of care.

What We Recommend

We recommend Guardian SecureFuture when the buyer wants future guaranteed income, has enough liquid money elsewhere, understands that the decision is generally permanent, and Guardian’s actual payout is competitive with the full A- or better-rated market.

We would not purchase it merely because Guardian is a great insurance company. We would not purchase it for accumulation. We would not use Life Only unless the buyer knowingly accepts the possibility that nothing will be left for beneficiaries.

For most retirees who want lifetime income and continued control, we would first compare a fixed indexed annuity with a contractually guaranteed income rider. If the Guardian DIA pays materially more and the buyer does not need flexibility, Guardian SecureFuture can be the better tool.
