Our Professional Opinion on the American Equity GuaranteeShield MYGA
We recommend considering the American Equity GuaranteeShield when its guaranteed rate is among the highest available from A- or better-rated insurance companies for the term you want. GuaranteeShield is available in three- and five-year terms, and we would not automatically favor the shorter option.
We are currently in a high-interest-rate environment. If you can comfortably leave the money untouched and the five-year rate is competitive, locking the rate for the longer term can be a good idea. It protects you from having to reinvest in three years if MYGA rates are lower at that time.
The three-year term may still be the better choice when you expect to need the money sooner, want more flexibility, or the three-year rate is materially better. The correct term is the period you can realistically leave the money alone—not simply the shortest contract available.
American Equity meets our financial-strength standard, so the recommendation comes down to the guaranteed rate and the contract provisions. With a MYGA, we want the highest contractual fixed rate from a financially strong insurer that also provides the liquidity, death benefit, RMD treatment, and maturity date the buyer needs.
GuaranteeShield can be a good MYGA, but it is not automatically the best MYGA. Rates change frequently, and the three- and five-year versions need to be compared with every A- or better-rated insurer available when the application is submitted.
The standard penalty-free withdrawal provision does not begin until after the first contract year. Beginning after that waiting period, the owner can generally withdraw a portion of the contract value annually without a surrender charge. That is fine for someone intentionally locking in money, but it is not appropriate for emergency savings.
We like the nursing-home and terminal-illness waivers, standard account-value death benefit, RMD treatment, and penalty-free renewal window at the end of the guarantee period. The contract does include a Market Value Adjustment and does not provide a contractual return-of-premium feature.
Our bottom line: GuaranteeShield is a good choice when American Equity is paying one of the strongest rates for the period you can leave the money untouched. In the current rate environment, the five-year term can be attractive when its rate is competitive and liquidity is not needed. The three-year term is better when earlier access matters or its rate provides the stronger value.
Compare the GuaranteeShield rate with the current fixed annuity rates before purchasing.
What We Like
- A-Rated Insurer: American Equity exceeds our A- minimum standard.
- Three- and Five-Year Choices: Buyers can choose the guarantee period that matches when the money will be needed.
- Longer-Term Rate Lock: The five-year version can reduce reinvestment risk when current rates are attractive.
- Annual Access After Year One: A portion of the contract value can generally be withdrawn penalty-free after the first contract year.
- Health-Related Waivers: Qualifying nursing-home confinement or terminal illness can provide additional access.
- RMD Treatment: Eligible required minimum distributions can receive favorable withdrawal treatment.
- Renewal Window: The owner can surrender or reposition the money without normal charges during the end-of-term window.
What We Don’t Like
- No Normal First-Year Liquidity: Standard penalty-free access begins after the first contract year.
- Market Value Adjustment: Early withdrawals above the free amount may be increased or reduced by the MVA.
- No Return of Premium: The owner cannot assume the full original premium will be available after an early surrender.
- The Rate Still Has to Be Competitive: A longer lock is only valuable when the guaranteed rate compares well with the market.
Comparing Options for Protection, Liquidity, and Simplicity
The American Equity GuaranteeShield Series is a fixed multi-year guaranteed annuity (MYGA) designed to provide principal protection, guaranteed interest, and tax-deferred growth. The product is available in two versions: GuaranteeShield 3 (3-year term) and GuaranteeShield 5 (5-year term), each backed by American Equity Investment Life Insurance Company—rated A- (Excellent) by AM Best, S&P, and Fitch.
This review explores how each version works, who benefits most, and which types of insurance or annuity enhancements may pair well with the product.
How the GuaranteeShield Annuity Works

- Free withdrawal privileges of up to 10% annually after the first year
- Market Value Adjustment (MVA) that may affect withdrawals over the free withdrawal amount
- Nursing home and terminal illness waivers that allow 100% access penalty-free in qualifying cases

Why Compare Annuities Before You Buy?
Not all MYGAs offer the same liquidity features, withdrawal benefits, or death protections. Some come from unrated carriers or offer teaser rates that drop upon renewal. Comparing MYGAs ensures:
- You get the highest guaranteed return
- You’re with a strong, rated carrier
- The terms and fees match your needs
- You don’t miss out on enhanced income or legacy options
Pros and Cons
Pros
- A- rating (Excellent) from AM Best, Fitch, and S&P
- Transparent liquidity options including health-related waivers
- Competitive minimum guarantees (90% with MGSV accumulation)
- Tax-deferred growth with principal protection
- Automatically renews without penalties if no maturity decision is made
Cons
- No GLWB income rider, which limits income planning flexibility
- Market Value Adjustment could reduce early withdrawal values if interest rates rise
- Not ideal for those who may need access to funds beyond 10% early on
- No optional enhanced death benefit or legacy planning rider
Who Should Consider GuaranteeShield?
Best For:
- Risk-averse savers who want guaranteed growth without market exposure
- People age 18–85 looking for a short to mid-term place to park funds
- Investors who don’t need immediate income but want principal protection
- Those seeking probate avoidance via a simple annuity structure
- Anyone who values withdrawal flexibility in case of nursing home or terminal illness events
Not Ideal For:
- Individuals looking for lifetime income (no GLWB rider)
- Those under age 59½ planning early access (IRS penalty may apply)
- Clients seeking equity-like upside or inflation hedging
- People with uncertain liquidity needs that could exceed 10% annually
Additional Coverage and Enhancements to Consider
While GuaranteeShield is strong for accumulation, it lacks income and advanced legacy features. Consider these options to complete your retirement plan:
- Lifetime Income: Fixed Indexed Annuity with GLWB – Guarantees income for life, even if account drains
- Enhanced Legacy Planning: Permanent Life Insurance – Creates an income tax-free death benefit
- Long-Term Care Protection: Asset-based LTC Insurance or Hybrid Annuity – Covers care costs without draining savings
- Inflation Defense: MYGA Laddering or Indexed Annuity – Staggered maturity or indexed gains for rising costs
What Happens After the Term Ends?
At the end of the 3- or 5-year term, you have five options:
- Renew into another term with new guarantees
- Partial withdrawal and renew the rest
- Annuitize into a stream of income
- Surrender without any penalties
- Do nothing, and the contract continues penalty-free with a flexible renewal rate
This flexibility allows time to reassess your goals without forcing a decision under pressure.
Bottom Line: Is GuaranteeShield a Good Annuity?
Yes—if your goal is safe, tax-deferred growth over 3 or 5 years with basic but flexible liquidity. It’s not a fit for income planning or advanced estate strategies. However, American Equity offers a strong MYGA choice; it is a well-rated carrier, ideal for conservative savers and those rolling over maturing CDs or 401(k) plans.
