Is The Axonic Trailhead FIA A Good Annuity?

Our Professional Opinion on the Axonic Trailhead FIA

Our opinion of the Axonic Trailhead FIA is mixed. We like that it offers guaranteed participation rates, but the guarantees are limited to select engineered indexes rather than the true S&P 500 strategies most buyers will recognize and understand.

That distinction materially changes our opinion of the product.

The current Trailhead rate sheet offers traditional S&P 500 point-to-point strategies using both a cap and a participation rate. However, those traditional S&P 500 rates are not locked for the entire surrender period. Axonic and AmFirst can change them at future renewals, subject to the contract’s minimum guarantees.

The fixed-interest option can also change annually. It should not be described as a MYGA-like fixed rate guaranteed for the full 5-, 7-, or 10-year surrender period.

Therefore, Trailhead does not completely solve the renewal-rate problem for buyers who want to use the true S&P 500 or the fixed account.

The participation-rate guarantees apply to select engineered indexes. Based on the current rate sheet, the guaranteed strategies include indexes such as:

  • S&P 500 Dynamic Intraday TCA Index
  • DB Foresight X-Asset 10 Index
  • Nasdaq-100 Volatility Control Index

Those are not the same as the traditional S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100. They use additional rules, volatility controls, asset-allocation formulas, or other engineered components that can materially affect performance.

A guaranteed participation rate on an engineered index can still be valuable because the insurance company cannot reduce that participation rate during the guaranteed period. However, locking the participation rate does not guarantee that the underlying engineered index will perform well.

That creates a different type of risk.

With a traditional index strategy, our concern is usually whether the insurance company will lower the cap or participation rate. With the guaranteed Trailhead strategies, renewal-rate risk is reduced, but the buyer takes on more index-design risk. The underlying engineered index may have limited live performance, complicated rules, volatility controls, internal index deductions, or historical results that rely heavily on backtesting.

We do not consider that as strong as locking a competitive cap on the true S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, or Russell 2000.

The traditional S&P 500 options are still worth considering when their current rates are competitive. We simply would not assume those rates will remain available throughout the surrender period. A buyer using the true S&P 500 needs to be comfortable with the possibility that the cap or participation rate will be reduced at a future anniversary.

The fixed account should be evaluated the same way. It provides a declared interest rate for the current period, but the rate can change annually. If someone intends to place most or all of the premium into the fixed account, we would compare Trailhead against current MYGAs from A- or better-rated companies. A MYGA provides a contractual rate guarantee for the selected term rather than a fixed rate that can reset every year.

The Interest Boost Rider is a useful first-period enhancement, but it does not fix either of these issues. It provides a one-time boost to interest credited after the first selected crediting period. It does not guarantee the traditional S&P 500 rate, lock the fixed rate, or provide an annual recurring bonus.

Do not buy Trailhead primarily because of the Interest Boost. First decide whether you are comfortable using an engineered index to obtain the full-term participation-rate guarantee or accepting renewal-rate risk on the traditional S&P 500 and fixed strategies.

Compare Trailhead With Today’s Best Fixed Indexed Annuities

Trailhead may fit someone who is comfortable using an engineered index in exchange for a guaranteed participation rate. However, buyers who want a locked rate on a traditional index should compare it carefully against other accumulation annuities.

Compare today’s best fixed indexed annuities for accumulation, lifetime income, liquidity, and other retirement goals.

What We Like

  • Guaranteed Participation Rates on Select Strategies: Certain engineered-index participation rates are guaranteed for the initial surrender-charge period.
  • Reduced Renewal Risk on Those Strategies: AmFirst cannot simply lower the guaranteed participation rate each year on the qualifying allocations.
  • Traditional S&P 500 Options: Buyers who do not want engineered indexes can use true S&P 500 cap or participation-rate strategies.
  • Multiple Contract Terms: The product is available with 5-, 7-, and 10-year surrender periods.
  • One-Year Crediting Choices: Buyers do not have to use a 2-year strategy.
  • Interest Boost Rider: A one-time enhancement is applied to qualifying interest credited after the first selected crediting period.
  • Principal Protection: Negative index performance does not directly reduce contract value.
  • Annual Liquidity After Year One: The owner can generally take multiple withdrawals totaling up to 10% of the prior-anniversary contract value after the first contract year.
  • Health-Related Waivers: Qualifying nursing-home confinement and terminal illness can provide additional access under the rider requirements.

What We Don’t Like

  • Traditional S&P 500 Rates Are Not Locked: The true S&P 500 cap and participation rate can change at renewal.
  • The Fixed Rate Can Change Annually: The fixed account does not provide the same multi-year rate certainty as a MYGA.
  • Guarantees Are Concentrated in Engineered Indexes: Buyers must use select manufactured or volatility-controlled indexes to receive the full-term participation-rate guarantee.
  • Guaranteed Participation Does Not Guarantee Performance: The underlying engineered index can still perform poorly.
  • Limited Live Index History: Some engineered strategies may have significantly more backtested history than actual live performance.
  • Complex Index Methodologies: Volatility controls, asset-allocation rules, excess-return calculations, and internal deductions can make performance harder to evaluate.
  • The Interest Boost Is Applied Only Once: It is not an annual recurring enhancement.
  • Two-Year Crediting Periods: We generally prefer one-year crediting unless the longer strategy provides a compelling advantage.
  • No First-Year Free Withdrawal: First-year withdrawals can be subject to surrender charges and an MVA.
  • Not Designed for Guaranteed Lifetime Income: Trailhead is primarily an accumulation annuity.

Our bottom line: Trailhead is not a traditional cap-lock FIA in the way we normally use that term. It guarantees participation rates on select engineered indexes, but it does not lock the true S&P 500 cap, the true S&P 500 participation rate, or the fixed interest rate for the full surrender period.

That makes Trailhead a reasonable accumulation option for someone who is comfortable with engineered indexes and values a guaranteed participation rate. For someone who wants a guaranteed cap on a transparent traditional index, we would compare other FIAs before purchasing it.

How It Works

You invest a single lump-sum premium (minimum $20,000, maximum $1,000,000 without company approval). Your money is protected from losses, while interest is credited based on index performance or a fixed account.

The Trailhead FIA offers one- and two-year crediting terms, with the ability to reallocate strategies at each renewal. Interest earned during a term is locked in and cannot be lost in the next cycle, even if markets decline.

It can be funded using non-qualified funds or qualified accounts, including IRAs, Roth IRAs, SEP IRAs, and 401(k) rollovers. This makes it a flexible option for tax-deferred growth, especially for those nearing or in retirement who want to limit exposure to market volatility.

Index Crediting Options

The annuity includes a combination of traditional and engineered index options, each with distinct goals and risk profiles.

Participation and cap rates vary by term, but for the S&P 500 Dynamic Intraday TCA, DB Foresight X-Asset 10, and Nasdaq-100 Volatility Control 7% indexes, participation rates are contractually guaranteed for the entire surrender period, ensuring rate stability and predictability.

Key Features

  • Issue Ages: Available up to age 89 years and 364 days
  • Ownership Options: Individual, joint (spousal), or trust ownership
  • Free Withdrawals: 10% of account value per year after the first contract year; $500 minimum withdrawal amount
  • Surrender Charge Schedule: Declines each year based on your selected term (5, 7, or 10 years)
  • Market Value Adjustment (MVA): Adjusts value for interest rate changes, but can benefit policyholders if rates fall
  • RMD Friendly: Required minimum distributions are allowed without penalty
  • Death Benefit: The full contract value is paid as a lump sum to beneficiaries if the owner passes away before annuitization

Riders and Waivers

  • Nursing Home Confinement Rider: Waives surrender charges and MVA if the owner is confined to a qualified nursing facility for at least 90 consecutive days (after the first contract year and before age 80).
  • Terminal Illness Rider: Waives surrender charges and MVA if diagnosed with a terminal illness (life expectancy of 12 months or less) before age 80.
  • Interest Boost Rider: Provides a one-time interest increase at the end of the first strategy term, multiplying credited interest by a boost percentage.

These waivers offer emergency access to funds during unexpected health events. However, they are not available in all states, including California.

Pros

  • Principal protection: Your money is never exposed to market losses.
  • Competitive participation rates: Particularly strong for multi-year guaranteed index strategies.
  • Guaranteed participation for select indices: Ensures stable returns across the full surrender term.
  • Health-based liquidity waivers: Provide valuable protection for illness or confinement.
  • Tax-deferred growth: Allows compounding without annual taxation.
  • Strong carrier: AmFirst Insurance Company maintains an A- (Excellent) rating for financial strength.
  • Flexible reallocation options: Choose new index strategies at renewal based on market conditions.

Cons

  • Engineered indexes can be complex: These may be harder for some investors to understand.
  • No income rider: This FIA focuses on accumulation rather than lifetime income.
  • Surrender charges: High early withdrawal penalties if funds are accessed before the end of the term.
  • Limited liquidity in the first year: No penalty-free withdrawals until after year one.
  • Caps and participation rates may change at renewal: Only select indexes have guaranteed rates for the full period.
  • Riders unavailable in California: Some benefits may be restricted based on state rules.

Who Should Consider It

The Trailhead FIA is ideal for individuals who want to preserve capital while earning more than a CD or savings account. It fits:

  • Pre-retirees seeking stable, tax-deferred growth.
  • Retirees looking to protect principal from market losses.
  • CD and bond investors want higher yields with minimal risk.
  • IRA and 401(k) rollover investors need safe, flexible accumulation options.
  • Those planning long-term but desiring some liquidity for emergencies.

Who Should Avoid It

This product may not suit investors who:

  • Require full access to funds within the first year.
  • Prefer lifetime income (consider an FIA with a GLWB instead).
  • Want direct exposure to stock market returns.
  • Are uncomfortable with engineered or volatility-controlled indexes.
  • Live in states with limited rider availability, such as California.

Complementary Insurance Solutions

What Happens After the Term

Once your contract term ends, you can:

  1. Renew for another term at current rates and participation options.
  2. Withdraw funds without surrender charges during the renewal window.
  3. Reallocate your funds among available crediting strategies.
  4. Roll into another annuity for continued tax-deferred growth.
  5. Annuitize to start income payments (though most should choose a GLWB annuity for flexibility and spousal continuation).

What Happens At Death

If the owner passes away before annuitization, the entire contract value is paid to beneficiaries as a lump sum. After annuitization, the remaining guaranteed payments continue to be paid to beneficiaries under the chosen payout option. Beneficiaries can also roll funds into an Inherited IRA annuity to continue tax-deferred growth while meeting IRS distribution requirements.

Final Thoughts

The Axonic Trailhead FIA is a competitive accumulation annuity offering protection, flexibility, and enhanced earning potential without market risk. Its guaranteed participation rates, health-based waivers, and strong financial backing make it appealing for savers seeking safety with growth potential. While it doesn’t provide lifetime income, pairing it with a GLWB annuity or life insurance plan creates a comprehensive, inflation-aware retirement strategy.
