Why Comparing Annuities Matters
Annuities aren’t one-size-fits-all. Every contract offers a different blend of growth potential, income security, fees, liquidity, and guarantees. Choosing the wrong product could cost you thousands in lost income or missed growth opportunities—especially if you’re locked into a long-term surrender period.
Most consumers buy based on the highest bonus, a brand name, or a salesperson’s pitch, without realizing what they’re giving up in return. That’s why it’s critical to compare products side-by-side. A well-informed comparison ensures you choose the most cost-efficient annuity that aligns with your specific financial goals, protects your money, and maximizes your future income.
Define Your Financial Goal First
Before comparing annuities, identify your top priority:
- Lifetime income? Focus on annuities with a Guaranteed Lifetime Withdrawal Benefit (GLWB).
- Safe growth? Consider a Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA) or a Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuity (MYGA).
- Short-term access or tax deferral? Prioritize liquidity features and account type compatibility.
- Legacy planning? Look for contracts that offer spousal continuance and lump sum death benefits.
Compare Annuity Types Properly
| Annuity Type | Best For | What You Might Give Up |
| Fixed Annuity | Guaranteed interest | Little to no inflation protection |
| FIA (Fixed Indexed Annuity) | Growth + protection | Capped upside compared to market |
| GLWB Annuity | Lifetime income with control | Reduced growth if income starts early |
| SPIA (Immediate Annuity) | Irrevocable lifetime income | Loss of control and access to funds |
| RILA (Registered Index-Linked Annuity) | Market upside with downside limits | Higher risk and complexity; avoid if unsure |
| MYGA | Safe short-term growth | No lifetime income option or flexibility |
Avoid comparing apples to oranges. Only compare products designed for the same purpose.
Evaluate Growth Options
Most annuities offer a 1-Year Fixed Account with a declared interest rate that resets annually. This lets you earn a guaranteed return without indexing.
If using a Fixed Index Annuity, ask:
- Does it offer traditional indexes like the S&P 500 with 10+ years of history?
- Are the crediting methods understandable and transparent?
- Participation Rate (preferred)
- Cap Rate
- Spread/Threshold
Avoid engineered indexes unless you’re using the annuity strictly for income. Most have no track record and are designed to lower the carrier’s risk—not enhance yours.
Analyze Income Rider Options (If Needed)
If income is the goal, choose a GLWB over annuitization. You keep control and walkaway value. Compare:
- Income payout types: level, increasing, or performance-based
- Payout rates at specific ages
- Rider fees and how they impact your account
- Roll-up structure: is it guaranteed or performance-based?
We prefer GLWBs with guaranteed income growth when income is needed within 10 years, and performance-based only if you have time and understand the trade-offs.
Review Liquidity Provisions
A good annuity lets you access funds without penalty in emergencies or life events. Look for:
- 10% penalty-free withdrawal—some allow it starting in year 1, others after the contract anniversary
- Waivers for:
- Terminal illness
- Nursing home confinement
- Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
- Hospitalization
- Return of premium (ROP) if available
These waivers help you avoid surrender charges when the unexpected happens. Not all contracts include them.
Understand the Surrender Schedule
The surrender charge period is the timeframe during which early withdrawals are penalized. Longer surrender schedules often offer better benefits but reduce flexibility.
Security Tip: Surrender charges protect the insurer from short-term withdrawals so they can offer stronger guarantees. Make sure to ask what happens after the surrender period:
- Does the contract turn into a liquid, interest-bearing account?
- Can you transfer or withdraw all funds freely?
Look at the Death Benefit
All annuities return the account value as a lump sum to beneficiaries. Some allow spousal continuation, keeping the contract in place.
Important: If you annuitize, you may lose full access to your funds and restrict what your heirs receive. That’s why we generally do not recommend annuitization unless there’s no better option.
Avoid Overpaying in Fees
Annuities with GLWB riders typically charge a fee between 0.75% and 1.5%, deducted from your account annually.
- Avoid:
- Fee-based GLWBs unless they deliver superior income
- Performance-based riders unless income is far off and the floor is guaranteed
- RILAs and Variable Annuities—these come with high internal fees and less predictability
Choose a Financially Strong Insurance Company
We only recommend carriers rated A- or better by AM Best. Verify these:
- AM Best, S&P, Moody’s, and Fitch
- Comdex Score (ideally 80+)
Remember: A guarantee is only as strong as the company behind it.
Work With an Independent Broker
Don’t buy annuities directly from a bank or single company. They typically only sell one product line.
A broker can:
- Shop across 30+ insurance carriers
- Match your needs to the right product
- Explain what you’re giving up and what you’re gaining
- Ensure you don’t overpay in fees or give up control unnecessarily
Why This Matters: Every Annuity Is a Trade-Off
Choosing an annuity always involves trade-offs:
- Higher income = lower growth potential
- Higher growth = less liquidity or lower guaranteed income
- Bonuses = vesting and lower index crediting
- Shorter terms = less upside but more flexibility
The best annuity is the one that fits your goals at the lowest cost—with the fewest sacrifices. Comparing products side-by-side helps you avoid regret later.
