Compare Your Fidelity Quote With Other Fixed Annuities
Use the table below to identify contracts worth comparing with your Fidelity quote. This is a broader-market comparison tool, not a Fidelity-issued rate sheet. A product listed here is not necessarily sold through Fidelity. Confirm the rate’s effective date, state availability, premium requirements, and funding deadline before relying on any entry.
For the wider market, compare fixed annuity rates across insurers and guarantee periods. A higher advertised rate deserves consideration, but it does not automatically compensate for a longer commitment, weaker withdrawal provisions, or an insurer you are uncomfortable relying on.
Fidelity 3-Year and 5-Year Quotes: Match the Guarantee Period
When requesting a three-year or five-year quote, compare it with the same term elsewhere. A five-year guarantee is not an equivalent alternative to a three-year guarantee simply because its rate is higher. Confirm which terms are actually available for your state and deposit; do not assume every insurer offers every duration.
For fixed deferred annuities with multiyear rate guarantees, commonly called MYGAs, ask for the guaranteed value at the end of the initial period. This makes the comparison more useful than looking at a percentage alone. State whether interest will stay in the contract or be withdrawn, because that changes the ending balance.
| What to match | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Issuing insurer and product | The legal insurance company on the contract, not just the distributor’s name. |
| State and premium | The same residence, deposit amount, and applicable premium tier. |
| Guarantee period | The number of years the quoted interest rate is guaranteed. |
| Crediting and compounding | How interest is calculated, whether it remains invested, and the guaranteed end-of-term value. |
| Access to money | The free-withdrawal provision, surrender schedule, and any market value adjustment. |
| Beneficiary treatment | The amount payable at death and whether any charges or payout restrictions apply. |
| Quote validity | The rate-lock rules, application requirements, and deadline for receiving funds. |
Check Withdrawal Rules Before Choosing the Highest Rate
Read the surrender charge schedule alongside the interest guarantee. The two periods are not automatically identical. Ask how much you can withdraw without a surrender charge, when that allowance begins, and whether unused allowances accumulate. A penalty-free allowance under the contract does not mean a withdrawal is tax-free.
A market value adjustment can increase or decrease an early withdrawal value under the contract’s formula. It is separate from a surrender charge, and both may apply. The insurer’s explanation of market value adjustments illustrates why the amount available to cash out can differ from the displayed annuity account value.
Our recommendation: Keep emergency savings outside the annuity. When access matters, also compare contracts offering accumulating free withdrawals or a return-of-premium feature, where available. Those benefits can involve trade-offs, including a lower rate or restrictions on what is returned. Never assume “principal protection” means you can leave early without a financial consequence.
What Happens When the Rate Guarantee Ends?
The initial rate is guaranteed for the stated period, not necessarily for the life of the contract. A renewal rate can be higher or lower, subject to the contract’s minimum guarantee. The NAIC’s explanation of initial and renewal rates makes that distinction important when comparing a MYGA with a longer-term income strategy.
Before the period ends, ask the insurer for your renewal choices and any deadline to act. Depending on the contract, you may renew, withdraw, transfer, or exchange the money, or annuitize the contract. Renewal may bring a new commitment or surrender schedule. Check the actual terms rather than assuming the account automatically becomes fully liquid.
A qualifying insurer-to-insurer exchange of a nonqualified annuity may defer recognition of gain, but cashing out and then buying another contract is not automatically the same transaction. The IRS rules for annuity taxation and exchanges and the receiving insurer’s requirements should be checked before moving money. Tax deferral does not erase surrender charges on the contract you leave.
Who Benefits From a MYGA—and Who Should Pass?
A MYGA may fit someone who wants a known rate for a defined period, can leave that portion of savings in place, and values protection from stock-market-linked losses. An existing Fidelity customer may also value keeping the purchase within a familiar platform. The advantages are predictability and a clear accumulation target; the disadvantages are limited access, inflation risk, and uncertainty about the next renewal rate.
A MYGA is a poor match for emergency money, a near-term purchase, or someone who needs unrestricted withdrawals. It is also not automatically the right answer for a retiree whose main problem is income for life. Repeatedly renewing fixed-rate contracts leaves future renewal conditions unresolved. Separate the growth decision from the lifetime-income decision instead of expecting one contract to do every job.
An annuity is not a bank deposit. The FDIC does not insure annuities; contractual guarantees depend on the issuing insurance company. Evaluate the issuer’s financial condition and your overall exposure to that company. Buying several contracts from the same insurer does not diversify that insurer risk.
How to Request and Fund a Like-for-Like Comparison
- Obtain the actual offer. Ask Fidelity for the insurer, product, premium, state, guaranteed rate, guarantee period, renewal terms, and full withdrawal schedule. Request the rate-lock and funding requirements in writing.
- Request matching alternatives. Send the same information when requesting fixed annuity quotes. Compare guaranteed end-of-term values and contract restrictions, not just a headline percentage.
- Select the ownership and funding method. Use an eligible retirement-account transfer or rollover, or nonqualified annuity funding, as appropriate. Product eligibility and tax treatment must be checked before the application is submitted.
- Complete the application and coordinate the transfer. Provide the required financial and beneficiary information. The receiving insurer and current custodian or plan administrator handle their respective steps; respond to any authorization requests. Review the issued contract and its cancellation rights before the applicable review period ends.
For retirement-account planning, use the IRA calculator or Roth IRA calculator to explore the relevant account assumptions. For workplace-plan money, review the 401(k)-to-annuity rollover process. The IRS rollover requirements determine eligibility and tax treatment; moving pretax money into a Roth account can create taxable income.
When Your Goal Changes From Growth to Income
A fixed interest rate measures interest credited to savings. A lifetime withdrawal percentage or income payment is different and may include a return of your own premium. Do not rank these figures as though they were equivalent investment yields. Our broader annuity rate comparisons by product type distinguish different shopping needs.
For an income-first decision, compare immediate annuity contracts, deferred income annuity contracts, and a guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit. A fixed indexed annuity with an appropriate rider is another structure to evaluate, not a MYGA interest-rate substitute.
Use the annuity income calculator and the comparison tool below for an initial income discussion. Shoppers needing payments now can compare annuities for immediate income; couples can evaluate annuity options for married couples. Read about the different types of annuities before selecting a retirement annuity for a different purpose.
Protect Savings You May Need Before the Term Ends
Do not fund the annuity with money needed for essential insurance premiums. Long-term care insurance may help people who want coverage for qualifying care expenses. Life insurance addresses a financial loss to beneficiaries after a covered death. Disability insurance may replace part of a working person’s earnings after a qualifying disability. These cover different risks; a MYGA does not replace them.
Additional coverage is not necessary solely because you buy an annuity. Review existing benefits, dependents, affordability, and the risk you still need to insure. Keep enough accessible money for expenses that insurance will not pay. The NAIC explains long-term care coverage and disability income coverage as separate protection needs.
What We Recommend Before Accepting a Fidelity Quote
Get a written offer, compare the same term and premium, and choose only after reviewing liquidity and insurer strength. We would not accept a materially worse contract merely for convenience. We would not reject a competitive Fidelity offer merely because it came through Fidelity, either.
Our independent annuity broker service can compare your written Fidelity proposal with alternatives available through our agency. No distributor covers every contract, and an independent comparison does not guarantee that we can sell the exact product Fidelity quoted. We explain how our agency is compensated; our quote-comparison service has no advisory charge or obligation, but insurance contracts still have costs and restrictions.
For product selection, fees, and the pros and cons of buying through the platform, see our Fidelity annuity review.
Questions About Fidelity Fixed-Rate Quotes
Is there one current Fidelity fixed annuity rate?
No. The applicable offer depends on the issuing insurer, product, guarantee period, premium, state, and purchase timing. Use a dated written quote and confirm the rate-lock requirements before sending money.
Does a five-year quote always beat a three-year quote?
No. The terms solve different needs, and neither duration always has the higher rate. Compare the same term across insurers first, then decide whether the additional commitment fits your plans and access requirements.
Will I keep the same rate after the initial guarantee?
Not necessarily. Renewal follows the contract’s rules and may use a different rate. Review the renewal notice, minimum guarantee, withdrawal window, and any new surrender period before making a decision.
