What a 7-Year Annuity Really Means

A 7-year annuity is an insurance contract with a seven-year surrender period. During those seven years, your money is either growing, paying income, or preparing for future income, depending on the annuity type.

Most “fixed” annuity shopping comes down to three options:

  • MYGA for a guaranteed rate over the full term
  • Fixed indexed annuity (FIA) for index-linked growth potential with no market-loss risk
  • Period certain annuity for a guaranteed income stream that lasts exactly seven years, then stops

Why do people choose seven years?

  • Often stronger contractual value than 5–6 year terms
  • Enough time to benefit from compounding or index resets
  • Aligns well with retirement, Social Security timing, or income bridges
  • Still flexible enough to reposition later

7-Year Period Certain Annuity Rates

How It Works: A 6-year period certain annuity pays income for exactly seven years. It does not provide a lifetime income. Payments are contractually guaranteed for the fixed period and then stop. A 7-year term pays roughly 16.11% payout for the seven-year term, then stops. If an annuitant dies before the term, the beneficiaries will receive the remaining payouts.

Example: A $100,000 period certain annuity would pay roughly $16,110 in annual payments for seven years.

7-Year Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA) Rates

How it works: A 7-year FIA earns interest based on the performance of a market index (like the S&P 500), without market loss risk. You earn interest when the index goes up, and you are protected when it goes down.

Insurer and ContractHypothetical Annual Rate of Return
Athene Performance Elite 7 Plus25.63%
Eagle Life Eagle Select Focus 721.85%

Please Note: Unlike MYGAs, Fixed Indexed Annuities do not offer a guaranteed annual interest rate. The returns listed above represent hypothetical historical performance based on specific uncapped index participation strategies. In years when the underlying index is flat or negative, your contract will credit 0% interest while safely protecting your principal from market losses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens after the 7-year annuity term is up?

After year seven, surrender charges typically drop to zero, and you regain full control of your annuity. You can withdraw funds, exchange into a new annuity using a tax-deferred 1035 exchange (for non-qualified money), renew the contract, or activate income options if available. Letting the annuity auto-renew without reviewing options usually leads to weaker terms.

Do I have to take my money out after 7 years?

No. You are not forced to cash out. A 7-year annuity gives you a checkpoint—not a deadline. You can keep the contract in force, reposition to a new annuity, or shift into an income strategy depending on interest rates, taxes, and retirement timing.

What happens to a 7-year MYGA after it matures?

Most 7-year MYGAs roll into a renewal rate determined by the insurance company. These renewal rates are often less competitive than what’s available in the market. Many people exchange into a new MYGA, ladder into multiple terms, or pivot into a fixed indexed annuity to address inflation risk.

What happens to a 7-year period certain annuity after payments end?

When the seven years of guaranteed payments are complete, the contract ends. There is no remaining account value. This is why period certain annuities are best used as short-to-mid-term income bridges, not long-term retirement solutions.

Are there taxes due when the 7-year term ends?

No taxes are due simply because the term ends. Taxes are only triggered when money is withdrawn. For non-qualified annuities, only the gains are taxable. Qualified annuities (IRAs) follow normal retirement account tax rules regardless of term length.

Can I move a 7-year annuity without paying taxes?

Often yes. Non-qualified annuities can usually be transferred using a 1035 exchange, allowing tax-deferred movement into a new annuity. Qualified annuities can be rolled over like any other IRA or retirement plan asset.

Why do 7-year annuities usually pay better than shorter terms?

Insurance companies reward longer commitments. A 7-year term gives carriers more predictability, which often translates into higher guaranteed rates, better income efficiency, or stronger index crediting terms compared to 3- or 5-year options.

Who should consider a 7-year annuity instead of a 6-year option?

We would consider seven years when you can comfortably commit for that long and the actual quote offers a worthwhile improvement over six years. Compare guaranteed interest or locked crediting terms, depending on the product. An extra year is not automatically better value.
