Is The Americo Elite 5 Index Annuity Any Good?

Our Professional Opinion on the Americo Elite 5 Annuity

Our opinion of the Americo Elite 5 is that it is a just-OK accumulation annuity with one genuinely useful feature: the ability to lock the participation rate for the entire five-year crediting period.

That five-year guarantee addresses one of our biggest complaints with fixed indexed annuities. With many FIAs, the insurance company can offer an attractive participation rate when the contract is purchased and then lower it at future anniversaries while the owner’s money is still subject to surrender charges.

With the Elite 5’s five-year crediting options, the participation rate is guaranteed for the full five-year index period. Because the initial surrender period is also five years, Americo cannot lower that participation rate in the middle of the initial surrender term.

That is a legitimate positive, but it is not the same as receiving a five-year cap lock on a straightforward traditional index.

The index menu is dominated by sector and specialty indexes connected to the S&P, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones index families. These include healthcare, technology, biotechnology, and real estate indexes rather than a broad menu built around the traditional S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Dow Jones Industrial Average, or Russell 2000 strategies we normally prefer.

The product does list an S&P 500 option, but the five-year strategy uses a final-average participation-rate method rather than a simple annual point-to-point cap. The ending index value is based on an average rather than a single ending value.

That averaging can reduce the impact of a market decline near the end of the crediting period, but it can also water down a strong market gain. The buyer also has to wait through the full five-year period before the final indexed interest calculation is completed.

In other words, Elite 5 reduces renewal-rate risk but replaces it with index-selection and crediting-method risk. You know the participation rate cannot be lowered during the five-year period, but you still do not know whether the selected sector index or final-average method will produce a competitive return.

The one-year crediting options provide more flexibility and allow interest to be calculated annually. However, the participation rate is only guaranteed for that one-year period and can change when the strategy renews.

The declared fixed-interest account can also change annually. If someone intends to keep most of the money in the fixed account, we would compare the product with a MYGA that guarantees the interest rate for the entire selected term.

Another issue is the automatically renewing surrender period. After each five-year term, the owner receives a limited window to withdraw or transfer the money without surrender charges. If that window is missed, the contract can automatically renew into another five-year surrender-charge period.

That feature stinks for an owner who is not paying attention. Anyone purchasing Elite 5 should mark the renewal date and review the contract before another surrender schedule begins.

We would consider this annuity for someone who wants a relatively short FIA commitment, is comfortable using sector-oriented indexes, and values knowing that the five-year participation rate cannot be reduced during the crediting period.

We would not use it for someone who wants a transparent cap lock on a broad traditional index, annual interest crediting, guaranteed lifetime income, or a fixed rate guaranteed for multiple years.

Our bottom line: Americo Elite 5 is a niche accumulation FIA. The five-year participation-rate guarantee is good, but the specialized index menu, final-average crediting method, and automatically renewing surrender period keep us from calling it a great annuity.

Compare Elite 5 With Today’s Best Fixed Indexed Annuities

The five-year guarantee is valuable, but the underlying index and crediting method still have to be competitive. Other FIAs may provide clearer broad-market strategies, annual crediting, stronger liquidity, or more straightforward rate guarantees.

Compare today’s best fixed indexed annuities for safe accumulation, guaranteed lifetime income, liquidity, and other retirement goals.

What We Like

  • Five-Year Participation-Rate Guarantee: The participation rate cannot be reduced during the selected five-year crediting period.
  • Matches the Initial Surrender Period: The five-year crediting term aligns with the initial five-year surrender-charge period.
  • One-Year Options Are Available: Buyers who do not want a five-year crediting period can use annually resetting strategies.
  • Principal Protection: Negative index performance does not directly reduce the accumulation value.
  • Short Initial Commitment: The initial surrender period is shorter than the seven- and ten-year schedules found on many FIAs.
  • Annual Liquidity After Year One: The contract generally permits penalty-free withdrawals of a portion of the accumulation value after the first contract year.
  • Full Accumulation-Value Death Benefit: Beneficiaries generally receive the applicable accumulation value or guaranteed minimum value.
  • Health-Related Waiver: Qualifying nursing-home or hospital confinement can waive surrender charges under the endorsement provisions.

What We Don’t Like

  • Specialized Index Menu: Most choices are sector or specialty variations connected to S&P, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones index families rather than broad traditional benchmarks.
  • Five-Year Final Averaging: The five-year method uses an averaged ending value, which can water down strong gains.
  • No Annual Interest Lock-In on the Five-Year Strategy: The buyer must wait until the end of the full crediting period for the indexed calculation.
  • Guaranteed Participation Does Not Guarantee Performance: The selected index can still produce little or no credited interest.
  • One-Year Rates Can Change: Participation rates on the annual strategies can be reset after each crediting period.
  • Fixed Rate Can Change Annually: The declared account does not provide the same certainty as a multi-year guaranteed annuity.
  • Automatically Renewing Surrender Charges: Missing the limited renewal window can place the owner into another five-year surrender period.
  • No Guaranteed Lifetime Withdrawal Benefit: The product is designed for accumulation rather than flexible guaranteed lifetime income.
  • Market Value Adjustment: Excess withdrawals during the surrender period may be increased or reduced by the MVA.

The interest earned is based on the performance of selected financial indices, offering the potential for higher returns compared to traditional fixed annuities without the downside risk of direct stock market investment.

Tax-Deferred Growth

With the Americo Elite 5 Index Annuity, your earnings grow on a tax-deferred basis. This means you won’t pay taxes on the earnings until you make withdrawals. This can significantly enhance the accumulation of wealth over time.

Index Options

The annuity offers five index options, including sectors such as technology, healthcare, biotechnology, real estate, and the S&P 500. This allows for diversified exposure to various market segments and provides a balanced approach to growth potential.

Interest Crediting Methods

These methods determine how interest is credited based on index performance, allowing you to select the option that best aligns with your financial goals.

Penalty-Free Withdrawals

After the first year, you can withdraw up to 10% of the accumulation value annually without penalty. Additionally, full or partial surrenders are allowed penalty-free under certain conditions, such as confinement to a nursing home.
